Evolution of the early LEGO® thin plates
Thin Plates vs01 circa 1955

(data will be precised as more information becomes available)

The thin 2X8, 4X8, 6X8 and 4X8 round (right and left) were introduced circa 1955.

The first type (vs01) is illustrated below for two of the issues. It had no logo on the studs and the so-called "LEGO bone logo" was inscribed at the center of the underside of the plate. The molds were not numbered.

This type was issued before the so-called "waffle bottom". The studs are not hollow. Colours: off white, dark red and yellow. All early "white" examples seen were definitely creamish.

The full stud requires a higher pressure and/or molding time to avoid the concavity of the surface of the studs, as happened on the early 1X2 bricks. New molds were then machined to cast hollow studs. This is the so-called "waffle bottom". The plates were marked as before but now had the mold code inscribed beneath (see figure below). The code was made of a numeral and the following are known:

-4X8 round, right-sided - "1" and "3";

-4X8 round, left-sided- "2" and "4";

-2X8- "6";

-6X8- "1", "2" and "4".

New molds were produced to print the "LEGO" logo on each stud (almost invisible in the image below). These molds could have been obtained by re-machining the early vs02 molds but this was not the case: the hollow in the former vs02 was conical, while vs03 has conical hollows resulting in a thicker and stronger stud wall.

Mold codes known:

-4X8 round, right-sided - "3" and "4" ;

-4X8 round, left-sided- "2" ;

-2X8- "5";

-4X8- "3";

-6X8- "1", "2", "3" and "4".

The third version of the thin plates above is the last that will interest us. However, the following figure illustrates the fourth version, introduced in the 1960s. It is characterized by a system of underside tubes to connect firmly to the studs underneath.
