NOTA: Pode ler AQUI um trecho explicado d'Os Lusíadas descrevendo o Universo das Esferas.
English version
An introduction to the poem: This short poem is interesting in the almost casual manner by which Fernando Pessoa says the essential about Prince Henry (mood and all) in only five verses. The "spheres" refer to the Ptolomean model of the universe, that was accepted in the XV century, while the "globe of the world" refers to the orb which emperors used to hold as a symbol of the universality of their status.
Prince Henry, the Navigator
On his throne amidst the glint of the spheres,
With his mantle of night and solitude,
He has at his feet the new sea and the dead eras-
The only emperor who truly holds
The globe of the world in his hand.
