Evolution of the early 1X8 LEGO® brick

1X8vs01 circa 1955 | ||
(data will be precised as more information becomes available) The 1X8 brick was introduced circa 1955. The first type (1X8vs01) is illustrated below. It had no logo on the studs and "LEGO" was inscribed in block letters at the middle section under the brick. The brick had two cross supports. The studs were not hollow and in consequence the surface was often concave. Mold numbers known: "5", "10" and "11". NOTE: 1X6vs01 similar. |

1X8vs02 circa 1958 | ||
The problem with the concavity of the stud surfaces called for new molds. The second version of the 1X8 brick was introduced circa 1958 (see figure below). Studs are now hollow and there are three cross supports. The "LEGO" logo is inscribed sideways on the studs. Mold numbers known: "1" to "11". There are also unumbered bricks. NOTE: 1X6vs02 similar but only two cross supports. |
